Collagen
Injections
Collagen injections involve the injection of liquid
collagen to fill in contour deformities occurring in the
skin. This liquid collagen is made from the connective
tissues of cows (Zyderm and Zyplast produced by Collagen
Corporation ), and pigs (Fibrel produced by Mentor Corporation).
Approximately 3-10 % of those receiving collagen injections have
an allergic reaction. ( Skin testing should be performed prior
to this procedure. ) Dermalogen™
is a collagen derived from human dermis, and has less chance of
allergic reaction. The results relatively the same as those
obtained with animal collagen. Autologen™ is the
collagen prepared from a patients own skin. The
injections are approved for the filling of defects, but not for
gross implant or area enlargement. The treatment
results usually only last several months before they need to be
redone.
If you are allergic
to collagen then fat injection may be for you. Transfer of
your own fatty tissue from one area t another often results in
the desired contouring or filling effect.
