Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction Surgery is done to reduce the size of both breast or to reduce the size of a breast that is uneven in shape and size when compared with the other. The surgery  results in a repositioning of the nipple.  The surgery can be performed in different manners, but ultimately, after removal of tissue has occurred, the nipple, which is left attached to it's blood and nerve supply is repositioned.  As a result of repositioning, the nipple may lose sensation, and occasional scar tissue formation can effect the blood supply, resulting in a shrunken nipple. Additionally, some patients report an overly sensitive nipple. Sometimes breast feeding may not be possible after this surgery. 

 Any surgical procedure also carries a risk excessive bleeding.  This can occur during or following the procedure.  If it occurs after the procedure it usually just results in increase swelling and pain, which is temporary.  If  bleeding continues, it may be necessary to go back into surgery and stop the bleeding and remove excess blood that has accumulated.

Occasionally an infection around may occur. This is  most often seen within a week after surgery. 

Some women report loss of sensation in their nipple, but they may also become overly sensitive. Loss of sensation is more common in breast lift-implant procedures.  The area around incision may also have small patches of numbness, or increase sensitivity. These symptoms usually disappear within time, but may be permanent in some patients.  It usaully takes at least a full year to find out what the final sensation will be.
