This acronym stands for transverse rectus
abdominis myocutaneous flap. The rectus abdominus muscles are
the main muscle of the abdomen. The muscle has blood
supply at that also supply the fat and skin above it. The
blood vessels supply many different levels. A football shaped
portion of skin, fat, and underlying muscle are cut, and then
rotated from the abdominal wall into the area where the breast
was removed. This can leave weakness in the abdominal wall, and
a small percentage of women can develop abdominal wall hernias.
